Accessibility statement for Dalston Parish Council

This accessibility statement applies to www.dalston.org.uk.

This website is run by Dalston Parish Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

• change colours, contrast levels and fonts

• zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen

• navigate most of the website using just a keyboard or speech recognition software

• listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA

and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet (https://mcmw.abilitynet.org.uk) has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Dalston Parish Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelinees version 2.2 AA due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some uploaded images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Disproportionate burden

Dalston Parish Council is a small body with limited resources. Creating some documents from Word or Excel format and photocopied or scanned material from external sources to meet accessibility standards may represent a disproportionate burden.

Navigation and accessing information

There is no way to skip the repeated content in the page header.

When increasing the text size in blog posts some of the content overlaps.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

• Third party content under someone else’s control. For example documents including PDF’s relating to

the Annual Governance and Accountability Return (AGAR) are provided by an external source and

are outside of the control of the Council. These include scanned images and may not work with

screen readers.

• Maps.

PDF’s and other documents

Some of our PDFs and other documents do not meet accessibility standards as they are not structured to be accessible to a screen reader.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix documents for meetings that took place before 23 September 2018.

Any new PDF’s or word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We review our website for improvements in accessibility on a regular basis and make updates when required.
