Major Planning Applications in Dalston Parish
On Tuesday 8th July the Parish Council unanimously agreed to ask Carlisle City Council to defer decisions on these applications, pending the request for further information from the applicant. Dobbies Garden World - 7.47 Hectare Development - PC Asks for Refusal
Dalston Parish Council voted to ask Carlisle City Council to refuse this application due to its scale and position in the Parish. The count down to the 2008 Dalston Festival has begun. This year the Festival will be bigger and better than ever - just click the poster to view full size.
This year the Scarecrow Competition will have a 'people's vote'. You will be able to vote on-line for your favourite 3 scarecrows.

REMOVAL OF BT TELEPHONE KIOSKS
Your chance to comment on the removal of 3 telephone kiosks in Dalston Parish.
BT are proposing to remove telephone boxes on New Road, Dalston, at Gaitsgill and Raughton Head.
If you would like to register your comments as part of a consultation exercise being carried out by Carlisle City Council, then please use the Consultation procedure on this website by clicking here.

Cumbria Life Comes to Dalston
Dalston is privilaged to be the new home of Cumbria Life based at Barras Lane. The popular magazine is celebrating its arrival with a special feature about Dalston. And there is more ... accountants David Allen & Co. have sponsored a limited 500 run special cover featuring a picture of Dalston residents taken in the Jubilee Garden. Copies will be available on a first come first served basis from Tuesday 13th May from the Post Office and Corner Shop at a special price of 90p off the normal cover price. Dalston's Health Walk and Activity Circuit for All Ages and Abilities
On April 23rd 2008 the first health walk in cumbria was opened by Duncan Graham, Chairman of the Local Access forum, ably helped by some children from St Michael's Primary School. More ....

The successful Traffic and Parking Consultation event held on 15th March in the Victory Hall was attended by approximately 130 members of the public, mostly Dalston residents. Alongside this event Carlisle City Council presented details of the Conservation Area Review and invited comments. Click for more information.

David Moore Wins Top Prize At Dalemain

A bread created by David Moore, owner of the local bakery in Dalston, has won the prestigious title of ‘Best Marmalade Bread’ at the World Marmalade Festival hosted by Dalemain House in February. Click here for a full report

We recently showed the above pictures to illustrate the state of the roads in the Dalston area. Whether as a result of website exposure, serious pressure from the Parish Council or just the huge number of complaints made by the public to the County Council, some work has now been done. Local Businesses Help Parish Council with Station Entrance Project
The Parish Council, at its January Meeting, agreed to award a contract to Derek Tolson & Sons for the improvement of Dalston Station entrance for pedestrian safety and environmental reasons. Local businesses and other funding bodies are assisting with the project cost. More ....

Parish Council's Worst Fear Realised
For months Dalston Parish Council has been lobbying Cumbria County Council about the threat to safety posed by the railway bridge close to the BP Fuel Depot. On Friday 30th November a woman had an amazing escape when her car plunged through the bridge defenses and ended-up on the railway line straddling the southbound track.
The Parish Council has raised this matter frequently with County Councillor John Collier, Highways, Carlisle City Council and, just recently, with BP prior to their regular meeting with Network Rail. With the bridge so close to the BP Fuel Depot, the consequences of a vehicle landing on a loaded fuel train are unthinkable. More ..

Mr Fred Story of Story Construction Ltd, opens the Caldew Centre at Dalston's Caldew School
On Tuesday this new facility, including a 6th Form Centre, was opened by the principle of one of the Centre's main sponsors.

Cumbria Police have committed to the deployment of a Police Community Support Officer in Dalston. Dalston will be getting a Police Post - a suitable property has been selected. An announcement is expected shortly.

Dalston Festival Photographic Competition

Anyone can enter the photographic competition. All you need to do is to take one or more pictures at the Dalston Festival and, if possible, reduce the file size to under 100K (but don't reduce the actual picture size). If you cannot do this, then just send in the full picture and we will process it for you. You must specifically identify any pictures, using the drop down selection on the form provided, which are entries into the competition. You may enter a maximum of 3 pictures into the photographic competition.

Also, if you would like to send in some of your best pictures for inclusion on the website in the Festival area, then send those as well.

The One That Never Was!
Not to be daunted at missing the scarecrow deadline, this intrepid fellow dispensed with the usual straw and stuffing and decided that flesh and blood was much better. Mind you, standing there for 24 hours waiting to catch the judges eye tested every sinew!

St Michael's First Primary School in Cumbria to be granted National Support Status
Head, Stephen Fraser, has also been appointed as a National Leader. This is a very prestigious appointment, which gives him the opportunity to meet policy makers and to influence decisions. This recognises St Michael's capacity to support other schools.

New Dalston Recreation Building

SKIDDAW HOUSE REOPENS as a bunkhouse. If you are a walker and like to stay in remote areas, then you might like to visit the newly reopened Skiddaw House. The property is in the process of being renovated by a group of very enthusiastic volunteers. For more information, click here.

St Michael's CofE Primary School in Dalston rated by Ofsted as One of the Best in the Country
St Michael's is described, in the latest Ofsted report, as 'an outstanding and hugely popular school. Over the last three years it has been in the top 5% of all schools nationally in the value it adds to pupil's attainment between years 2 and 6'. Congratulations to staff, pupils and parents. CARLISLE DISTRICT COUNCIL - Local Plan; Revised Redeposit Draft 2001 - 2016
The Carlisle and district Local Plan, which was adopted in September 1997, covers the period 1996 to 2006. In order to reflect changing planning policy a Review has been undertaken which rolls the plan forwards to 2016. Once adopted the this Plan will replace the existing adopted Plan of 1997. Carlisle District Council have placed this draft, along with the associated SEA Environmental Report, on-line for public consultation.
