| BTs
proposal to remove phone boxes
BT
plan to remove a number of payphones across Carlisle
District and have consulted the City Council.
In
order for Carlisle City Council to reply it is inviting
local residents' views on the proposed removal of 27
phone boxes.
In
their letter of notification to the Council, BT said
that calls made from their payphones had more than halved
in the last three years with 60% of the 61,792 payphones
in Britain no longer covering their cost. BT has out
a review of its payphone provision and is now proposing
the removal of a number of payphones in the district.
The
telephone boxes proposed for removal are on New Road,
Dalston, Gairsgill and Raughton Head. See details of
Dalston Parish Council's initial response below.
The
timescale available for consultation is very short and
your views must be submitted to the City Council by
5pm on Friday 27th June 2008.
Please
complete the form below - your comments will be treated
in absolute confidence. If you would like to ensure
that you are notified about the future public meeting,
then please include your email address.

Dalston
Parish Council object to the removal of this PCB.
The nearest phone box would then
be in centre of Dalston Village and mobile phone
coverage is poor.
Nearly 40% of the community are aged over 60; and
20% have a long term illness; there are
only 33 households within 400m of this PCB, whilst
being a small catchment area it serves to
show that there is little alternative access to
private telephones. Nearly 15% of households in
this ward are either in privately or socially rented
accommodation. Access to sustainable
transport and services is amongst the lowest in
the district, combining to make this a
vulnerable community which needs to retain its PCB
for reasons of safety. Carlisle City
Council OBJECT to the removal of this Public Call
