& DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
The Club started in 1991 with a handful of
members meeting monthly upstairs in Church House. Over the
years, as we have grown, we have moved from the Methodist
Chapel Hall to the Victory Hall and currently membership is
at a record level of 150. Because of logistical problems we
have reluctantly decided to cap membership at this level.
We meet on the third Tuesday every month from September to
May in the Victory Hall for a variety of gardening related
talks followed by social refreshments and our popular raffle.
The exception to this is our Christmas Event in December,
which is one of the most popular events of the year, when
we have an American Supper and entertainment (cancelled this
year due to flooding ). The cyclamen plants which were ordered
for this event were sold in the Church during the Christmas
Tree Festival, for which we provided a decorated tree, and
raised £110 for the Cumbria Community Foundation.
As well as indoor events we have a Spring day out to visit
gardens outside Cumbria or to a Gardening Show. In May we
have our major fund raising event, the Plant Sale with Refreshments
in the Victory Hall, from which we donate 10% of the proceeds
to a local charity. This donation is pooled with donations
from other local Garden Clubs who have their Plant Sale at
the same time at a different venue and £326 was raised
for Carlisle & North Lakeland Hospice at Home. We also
have an outdoor meeting in June when we explore some local
gardens with supper afterwards and raise several hundred pounds
for the garden owners’ nominated charities. In July
we have a weekend away exploring gardens further afield and
this year we will be visiting the Worcester area. In August
we encourage our members to enter the fruit, vegetable and
flower classes at the Dalston Show and the Club sponsors the
Garden Photograph section of the Show.
We have celebrated our 10th, 15th, and 20th Anniversaries
with a special dinner and this year will be our 25th in September
which is now being organised.
Dalston & District Gardening Club continues to go from
strength to strength, adding to the quality of life in Dalston,
our members enjoying the social, educational, and self support
that the Club provides.
