Our thanks
go to the Parish Council for entering the Bowling
Club in a Special Category in the Cumbria in Bloom
competition. We were delighted to win our section
and to go to Muncaster Castle to collect the award.
Our floral displays, tubs and baskets, are always
supplied by our members Mike and Helen Raynerd
and are commented on each year by visiting teams.
Thank you also to John Hall, Jim Coward and Maurice
Scott who tend the rest of the grounds.
The
Bowling Club is not only in operation during the
outdoor season, April to September, but we have
two indoor rinks for the months October to March.
During the outdoor season we six teams who play
in various leagues. This year in the outdoor season
our ladies are the Champions of the Ladies League.
Well done girls!! The other leagues have not been
as successful but have not been disgraced. We
also have a number of friendly games with local
Clubs and visiting teams from other parts of the
country. During the winter season there are club
leagues most evenings and some afternoons. Bowling
is a very social pastime and as some say ‘a
great leveller’. It does not matter what
age you are or how much experience you have you
can always be beaten, usually when you least expect
it. So if you want to join a friendly crowd of
people in a sport that can be enjoyed by all please
let us know.
The
Club membership is in the region of 200, more
gentlemen than ladies, but would always welcome
new members, especially young people. The sport
of bowls used to be regarded as just for ‘old’
people but now there is a growing interest from
young people as well. Cumbria has quite a number
of young men who play at county and national level,
unfortunately the national players are not from
our Club.
